Subject: Small Business Resources

At a discussion at a Federation of Small businesss meeting recently it was agreed there are a plethora of resources available to small businesses in the West Country - some of them offering grants.. Unfortunately with so many the small business man/woman is totally confused as to who to contact.

I have two main web-sites offering services to small business www.onlinesomerset.co.uk and www.smesystems.co.uk
I am considering whether or not to convert one of these to a portal aimed at supporting small businesses generally in the south west.

My question is, is there support and a need for such a site and how would it be financed. Would it be supported by advertising such as UK Seek or would the sales of small business products and services be enough to support it? alternatively should it be supported by local authorities wishing to improve small businesses in the SW?

I would like to use this thread to measure support for this proposal and to gather opinions as to the best method to proceed. To this end I would be obliged if correspondents would enter their views on this matter and to suggest methods and content they would like to see in a site concentrating on this perceived need.
Also I invite suggestions from web site designers as to layout and easy-to-use facilities.
for instance should it be small business generally or should it be sub-divided by categories. E.g. business resources offering low-cost services to business, offering grants, or a problem-solving approach. And/or should it incorporate the services of the new Google Local directory still in beta.

All your suggestions pro and against would be appreciated, for instance how could YOU contribute to such a service and would the effort be worthwhile?
How would you want to see the site organised and what content would you want?
Or would it just add to the plethora of resources out there already?

Finally there are many users contributing to this site, should this be used as the vehicle? and for those contributors do they feel their investment has been rewarded - and how?
I look forward to your responses
