BAGO, hero of last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, will not only end his racing career in Japan but also begin his breeding career in the same country after the colt's owners sealed a deal to stand him outside Europe.

The winner of five Group 1 races, Bago made a valiant attempt to complete back-to-back victories in the Arc on Sunday, when he came home a fast-finishing third to Hurricane Run and in the process maintained his record of never having finished outside the first three.

Confirming future plans for Bago, the Niarchos Family's racing manager Alan Cooper said: "An agreement has been reached with the Japan Racing Association for the multiple Group 1 winner and European champion Bago to stand in Japan at the end of his racing career.

"In the meantime, Bago continues his race programme with the Breeders' Cup and the Japan Cup as his last objectives before retiring."

In what race Bago will run at the Breeders' Cup has yet to be decided, with both the Classic and Turf under consideration for a horse whose Arc triumph was supported by wins in the Prix Ganay, Grand Prix de Paris, Prix Jean Prat and Criterium International.

Shawanda's trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre on Thursday stressed that any decision on the beaten Arc favourite staying in training at four would rest with owner the Aga Khan.

Confirming that the Irish Oaks and Prix Vermeille winner had returned injured from Longchamp, de Royer-Dupre said: "Shawanda has sustained a hairline fracture to her off-hind length and she will now remain in her box for the next two months.

"She could completely recover from this injury and race next year but this will be a decision for the owner."

Christophe Soumillon, who rode Shawanda in the Arc, on Thursday paid a huge compliment to big-race winner Hurricane Run, a horse he partnered prior to the colt's purchase by Coolmore.

Speaking on French racing channel Equidia, Soumillon said: "I don't know why I was favourite for the Arc as I had no chance to beat Hurricane Run, who is a phenomenon."

日本仔真係有米同舍得,Bago應該係個馬主家族homebred出來的,咁都肯賣去日本配先,相信一定都係天價了!Richard
