>not ot be rude but you must not know much about hockey. first of all if Tim didn't deserve to be drafted in the first round. I like him he is a good player and I am glad we got him back, but he is FAR from a first round pick. If he was all other 30 teams would have been clawing to get him in the first round or even the 2nd round. It would have been a waste to take him in the first round. Second the minimun signing money for a guy in the 1st round is MUCH MUCH higher then a guy picked in the first round, the more rounds you drop the less money you make. If they drafted Tim in the first round They would have had to give him 2x what a player is given in the 3rd round and obviously if he wasn't drafted by any other team in the first or second round he isn't worth first round millions. If you are drafted in the first round the you have the upper hand in contract negotiations.
Also, there is this little thing going on rigth now called the CBA, when a new CBA agreement is reached young players coming in will be signing for less money. The Ducks if you haven't noticed are dumping payroll they traded Havelid for a much cheaper and younger player. They will probably also trade Salei for a young guy. They couldn't sign Brent by june b/c they don't have much money to throw around. They have to have their payroll which is currently at about 45 million down to 35 million. They didn't have the money to sign Brent, so they took their chances. The ducks have so many talented young forwards (Perry, Getzlaf, Lupul etc...). If they lost Brent it isn't that big of a deal. Agian I like him he is a good player, but he is not worth as much as Getzlaf or Perry, who the ducks still haven't signed. So now they have his rights again and since he dropped so low in the draft don't have to pay him as much money and also now have a few more years to sign him. So if they don't have the money to sign him now with all the labor uncertainty, they can wait and sign him next year.
Is Tim happy about this probably not, would you be happy if you went from possibly signing for 850,000 or so to around now you will sign for about 300,000? No. But, hockey is a business and I think the fact that Tim was still avaliable in the 3rd round shows the ducks did the right thing.
