Michael,
Jon and I met you after the Saturday matinee of the CIVIL WAR in St. Louis. We're old friend of Cindy Bowers. I had on a 'stars' dress and asked you for this address.
I have a message for you and the cast, may be a bit gushy and mushy but it's from the heart! Pleae pass this on.
Jon and I have been active in musical theatre most of our lives, from grade school to last year. We met at Iowa State University in 1974 when he directed me in a student run production of MAME. Twenty-two years later we have twin sons who are seniors in high school and a 12-year-old son as well. That bit of background 'sets me up' to say the following:
Jon and I both had several opportunities to do what all of you in the cast do. We chose to have children. Jon is the general manager of KSN-TV, I am an at-home Mom. I've had several successful drama ministries in churches and love directing theatre.
We often wonder what would have happened if, at the expense of all else, we'd have chosen to hone our God-given gifts as all of you have. You symbolize to us, our dream realized. You gave us AWE again and left us breathless. (Believe me, life in Joplin, MO, is very low in the AWE department, which is why I try to catch the sunrise. Bloom where you're planted.)
I imagine the tour can get exhausting at times. When you're working up the energy pre-show, think of us. Think of the other people like us in that audience who were held spell bound, not just by your outstanding voices, production and story, but by the joy and memory of that production that can never be taken from us. What a priceless gift you give away each time you step on that stage! Do you wake up each day, knowing you're doing 'the right thing'?
We thank you so much. God has blessed you, and in turn, blessed us by allowing us to share, even for one weekend, such fine actors flourishing, as you were put on the planet to do. We wish you all continued success and will attempt to follow your careers.
P.S.
I'm writing an historical novel on the CIVIL WAR, your production inspired me so much...
Thank you again,
Martha Haut
