Last night we went to the Drive-In. YES, we still have Drive-In movie theatres here. In fact, this one was built in 1949 and has run every season consecutively since it was built! (That's another subject I would love to talk about... the demise of the drive-in)
Anyway, on to the films!
It was my son's birthday, so we saw Spiderman 2. I was actually looking forward to seeing this film, as I really enjoyed the first one, and even bought the DVD. The first movie was a pleasant surprise to me, in fact. I never really expected to enjoy it as much as I did, even in subsequent viewings. As much as the first film delightedly surprised me, this one surprisingly disappointed me! In the first film, the relationships and the innocence of Peter were the center of the film, framed by some great CGI effects. This film, I believe, was the opposite. Way too much CGI, not enough heart. There were TWO poignant scenes. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but Aunt Mae's character brought some heart to this film, and Kirsten Dunst brought back the same sparkle and good acting that she provided in the original. I was really disappointed in Tobey Maguire. As good as I thought he was in the original, I was bored with his performance in this movie.
In conclusion, stick with the first one... wait to rent this one on DVD.
The kids went to sleep and allowed us to stay and watch the second movie without interruption... (another GREAT thing about the drive-in!) I wasn't sure that I even wanted to see this movie, actually, but decided that the quiet moments come far too seldom! lol Boy, am I glad I decided to stay!!
The movie was 13 Going on 30 starring Jennifer Garner (TV's Alias, Daredevil) What a PLEASANT surprise! They had me at the beginning of the movie (set in the 80's) when 13 year old Jenna had on the SAME ugly sweater that I owned at her age! I don't want to give anything away, but I just want to HIGHLY recommend this film for anyone that grew up in the 80's or remembers them FONDLY! I thought it was adorable, funny, and surprisingly romantic in parts!Mike thought it was cute too, so its not just a chick flick!
Finally, I saw the trailer for The Village, the new film from M. Night Shyamalan's(Sixth Sense, Signs)new film. Can't WAIT to see that! Horror movies at the drive-in are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!
