MEDIA RELEASE BY SENATOR BRIAN GREIG ON 4 APRIL 2004:
'Crisis of Masculinity' Just Sexism and Homophobia
The so called crisis of masculinity is little more than re-packaged arguments to support sexism and homophobia, according to Australian Democrats Senator Brian Greig.
"This new found concern for the welfare of boys is not as John Howard and Mark Latham would have us believe, about boys growing up without dads, lesbians adopting sons or a lack of male teachers, it's the underlying notion that such boys are being effeminised and the fear that these situations may lead to homosexuality itself," Senator Greig said.
Senator Greig says the real crisis in masculinity is found in the rampant sexual assaults against women and children, the disturbing levels of male violence and suicide, and the deep insecurity many men have towards sexual difference. He has called on political leaders to do more about these things rather than pursue nonsensical notions about male role models.
It is curious, that at a time when several rugby and AFL players are accused of being opportunistic rapists with appalling attitudes to women, there is a deafening silence about the crisis of masculinity which underpins this.
Surely no-one would seriously suggest this misogynist aggression is the result of single mums, lesbian parents or female teachers? Senator Greig said.
Senator Greig said women's roles as mothers and teachers was a positive influence on boys, and a small counterbalance to the macho-male imagery and ethos that floods their senses daily through popular culture, television and sport.
"Mr Latham and Mr Howard are also exposing double standards by failing to say anything about the lack of role models for girls, the glass ceiling for women in the workplace, and the lack of women in fields such as science, engineering and politics.
"These two men have also been silent about the dynamics of girls being raised by dads or in having no male teachers," Senator Greig said.
It seems that role models according to Mr Latham and Mr Howard, are only important for males.
Senator Greig said that if the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader were so concerned about the development of boys in the family, they should be looking at ways to ensure that dads could enjoy more flexible work hours in order to spend quality time caring for their young children, especially when aged between one and five years.
