There really are more gay men, say scientists
by Gus Cairns
Gay.com U.K.

A team of scientists has officially announced, in a major scientific journal, something that they have been saying at conferences for a year: There are twice as many gay men and lesbians in the U.K. as there were 10 years ago.

The final analysis of the sexual orientation figures from the year 2000 National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) appeared in the latest edition of the journal AIDS -- published on July 2, the day before Pride.

The 2000 survey revealed that 2.8 percent of U.K. men had had "at least one male partner with whom they had had genital contact in the last five years" -- the definition the survey used for a "man who has sex with men" (MSM). This was up from 1.5 percent in 1990. Nearly four in five of those had had sex with a man in the previous year.

"Any homosexual experience ever" -- which includes kissing and touching -- was up from 6 percent of men in 1990 to 8.4 percent of men in 2000.

And gay sexual experience before 16 was reported by 4.5 percent of men in 2000 -- 60 percent of it including anal or oral sex. This was up from 3.7 percent in 1990.

The survey also looked at how many men were exclusively gay and how many were living with a male partner. Nearly one in three MSM reported currently cohabiting with a male partner, and 55 percent were single, leaving one in six who were married to or living with a woman. A total of 43 percent of MSM reported also having at least one female partner in the previous five years.

The number of partners gay men had was up, too, with an average of four partners a year reported in 2000, compared with two in 1990. Fifteen percent of MSM had had more than 10 partners the previous year, and a quarter of MSM had had a new partner in the previous month -- an approximate measure of the proportion of gay men who have regular casual sex.

Gay men were also riskier in terms of sexual behavior than they were 10 years ago. In 2000, 60 percent of those who'd had anal sex reported they'd done it without a condom in the previous year, 10 percent more than in 1990.

Only one in eight MSM perceived themselves to be "quite" or "greatly" at risk of HIV -- exactly the same proportion as in 1990, despite the number of Britons with the virus having tripled during the 1990s.
