Dear LSS--Queer Officers,
As access to reproductive therapy and surrogacy may be of interest to queer
students in the faculty, I thought you might be interested in circulating
the following:
The Victorian Law Reform Commission is releasing three research papers:
ART, Surrogacy and Legal Parentage: A Comparative Legislative Review,
By Adjunct Prof John Seymour, Australian National University, and Sonia
Magri, Victorian Law Reform Commission/University of Melbourne
The Convention on the Rights of the Child: The Rights and Best Interests of
Children Conceived through Assisted Reproduction, By John Tobin, Faculty of
Law, Monash University
Outcomes for Children born of Assisted Reproductive Technology in a Diverse
Range of Families, By Dr Ruth McNair, Department of General Practice,
University of Melbourne
The research papers explore the rights of children born from assisted
reproductive technology and attempt to answer questions including:
Do children have the right to know the identity of their genetic parents?
Do children have the right to legal recognition of their non-genetic
parents?
What is the experience of children born into same-sex families?
What role can and should the law play in protecting and enhancing
children's rights?
There will be a public forum and launch of the three research papers
exploring assisted reproduction and the rights of children on:
Wednesday, 8 September 2004
11.00am to 1.00pm
(Morning tea from 10.30am)
Victoria University Conference Centre
Level 12, 300 Flinders Street, Melbourne
The forum will include presentations by the research paper authors and
questions from the floor.
Please see the accompanying invitation for more details. Anybody who would
like to attend is welcome.
Please RSVP Simone Marrocco by 30 August 2004 by e-mail
