惠能之能宏傳禪宗，在於它的覺悟。得衣缽大抵是十大弟子所編打的故事，因實又無衣又改為以壇經為印信。
禪宗的光大並沒有由當時六祖的十大弟子法海。志誠。法達。神會。智常。智道。志徹。志道。法珍。法如等人來傳承下去。門下抱的是一卷壇經代替衣來傳承。這個死物終於被人們所離棄而中斷。
反之行思及懷讓早就離開六祖而返到自己的地方去宏傳，他們所傳的一如六祖在黃梅所達到的覺悟。
故此禪家五宗公案都甚少以壇經作為參契。其脫離佛經範疇更大大超過六祖的思想。可惜的是宋末後禪宗已失人才，又重新回去佛經舊籬笆，回到迷信宗教怪力亂神的道路。單從敦煌本到惠昕本到宗寶本，恰恰可以看到禪宗這程變化的道路。
