Pakistan Carina Nygaard
The General Assembly
Child Labor Human Rights

UN,

Disappearances, child labor, torture, and police abuse are too common practices in the nations of South Asia. South Asia has some of the poorest countries. The United Nation declaration of human rights states that in article five “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.” and in all of Asia there are people and children that are being subjected to torture. For example Child labor forces in countries such as Pakistan, India, and China.

The UN has helped by passing laws and helping the countries find alternatives to child labor. They have made treaties and tried to lessen the amount of children that are working in factories.

I. Expresses Deep Concern

(A) The child labor in South Asia and other parts of the world is what keeps the factories still running. Countries have passed laws to stop child labor but in some countries for example Pakistan, there is still about 11 million children aged four to fourteen still working in factories.

(B) The low cost of child labor gives an advantage in the Western marketplace, where they undersell their competitors from countries prohibiting child labor, often by improbable amounts. The countries that are following the law and not using child labor are not able to sell their products against the manufactures that use child labor because the companies that use child labor are able to sell their products cheaper.

(C) Over half of the children that live in South Asia and about one third of the children in all of Asia are working in factories by the age of ten. Children make up a quarter of the unskilled work force, and are found in every factory, workshop, and every field.

II. Is Aware That

(A) Realizes that laws have been passed to stop child labor in developing countries.

(B) Is aware that some of the most popular brands in the U.S. are using child labor and the people in the U.S. are buying the products.

(C) The typical person in Pakistan survives on $5.00 a day and Pakistan is a traditional culture where the earning of one person goes to feeding 10 mouths; and with the high rate of inflation it becomes difficult for a low income population to survive.

III Recommends

(A) That the general assembly

1. Invest money in machinery that can be run by a computer instead of a child.

2. Have big name companies such as Nike that has been using child labor in the past find alternatives to making their products.

3. Build more schools so that the kids can go to school and get an education instead of working in factories.
