Indonesia Jacquie Tilden
The General Assembly
Improving the Sanitation in Indonesia

The General Assembly,

Realizing that all countries have a right to live in clean and hygienic nations, yet the sanitation provided in Indonesia has been inadequate,

Aware that the sanitation has improved from the past years however compared to other regions it is strikingly low,

I. Expresses Deep Concern
(A) That 27% of the people in Indonesia are below the poverty line and may not have any access to adequate sanitation;

(B) That the total percentage of access to sanitation has remained under 50% of the population;

(C) That the projects provided by the IRC International Water and Sanitation Center have not been able to solely fulfill needs in Indonesian cities;

(D) The air in Indonesia is heavily polluted, as Indonesia has not had more than a month of clean air in the past 3 years;

II. Is Aware That

(A) Realizes that the IRC receives funding from the Dutch government, European Commission, UNICEF and the UK Department for International Development, and other sources;

(B) Recognizes that the government of Indonesia and the UN have other expenditures to continue or other issues to meet;

(C) Is aware IRC has recently spent $124 billion+ on a major project, plus other contributions in Indonesia towards sanitation projects in schools, villages, etc;

(D) Recognizes that government projects and other organizations have facilitated sharing, promotion, and use of knowledge to inform organizations and citizens;

(E) Has identified that the total population’s access to sanitation has improved from 46% in 1987 to 57% in 1998 and is continuing to increase;

III. Recommends

(A) That the Economic and Social Council:

1. Provide clean water to the 50% of Indonesian people living without access;

2. Develop more available programs and community organizations to campaign for more funding towards air and water purification;

3. Bring better medical care to those with diseases as results of inadequate sanitation;

4. Provide more space for wildlife and/or trees to purify air, and work to take away busyness in roads;

5. Manufacture fewer cars that are giving pollution, and create alternative forms of transportation through bikes, subways, carpool buses, etc.;

6. Communicate more to citizens the major issue of high pollution, and their part in reducing it;

7. Assure that health and social welfare services are recognized for the support given from them

8. Establish community councils that are able to perform small projects to take parts in bringing clean water, or purifying air in Indonesia;

9. Form small organizations that encourage sanitation improvement through people of the community, such as litter patrols like ‘Adopt-A-Road’ or other missions to get rid of pollution.
