Action about Aids

The General Assembly,

Realizing that aids is a growing problem for many areas of the world and kills millions of people every year. It demands our attention and should be fought by preventing the spread of the disease to more people through education.

I. Expresses Deep Concern

A. The number of those suffering from HIV/Aids is growing and should be reduced.

B. People are acquiring the disease without knowing they are becoming infected, they then pass it on without knowing they have it.

C. The disease is killing millions especially in sub Saharan Africa where there is no funding to control the disease.; in South Africa where they had 360,000 deaths in 2001;

II. Is Aware That

A. Aids is a growing problem for many nations many can�t afford the costly drugs necessary to temporarily ward off the disease., even the US has an average of 380,000 deaths per year.

B. People are lacking the knowledge necessary to effectively combat the disease, everyone needs to know the problem especially with someone in the US becoming infected every 13 min and someone dieing every 11 min.

C. 40 million people are estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS.

D. Education is a more realistic approach to preventing the spread of the disease for poor developing countries rather than trying to fund medical research to prevent it

II. Recommends

A. That UNAIDS

1. Create a public awareness program to alert people about aids and how to prevent it

2. In schools add a class at the elementary school level teaching about aids, its dangers, and how to prevent it

3. Enlist the support of both religious and political leaders to publicly speak about the need for aids prevention and awareness.

4. Provide pamphlets that will educate people about the disease that can be obtained for free in common public places such as markets and doctor offices.
