A lanky beast, probably no larger than your average sheep, although cultured in aspect, lurks in the shade of an empty stall. His weathered face is turned toward the busy forum, pendant ears erect and alert for the sound of his master's calling, should it ever grace his hearing again. His eyes skim the crowd, devoting special attention to young boys, perhaps searching the multitude of people for a particular person. A leather circlet is slung loosely about his thick neck, upon which dangle a few brass tags. Neither of them dons any text. The dog's master was, as many are these days (save for what the church teaches them), illiterate and poorly educated.

The animal continues like this for most of the day, imparting passers-by with a friendly wag of his whip-like tail. He never attempts to move from his spot, however, but obediently waits, as he was told to do. His master left him three days ago, and he hasn't come back. Jonquil, a sylvan rust-colored coonhound mix, hasn't budged since, despite various proposals made by young townsfolk to come and join them in a better lifestyle. Jonquil easily dismissed them, as they do not know the depth of his loyalty. But the dog will find out soon enough that his master is not coming back.
