Your response is right on for a professional counselor; I'm going strictly on past experience and looks without knowing any history. For this reason:
Virtually every really hard alcoholic I've seen, even if they've stopped drinking, has that baggy-eyed, flat affect, not too quick on the uptake look about them. In a drinker (isn't this true, Diane?) they can destroy some brain cells and come across looking about two bricks shy of a walkway. Used to see a lot of those in Psych; I don't think I ever saw an alcoholic that didn't have some emotional problems as well. I'm talking severe ETOH use, not your average cocktails at 5 crowd, unless it goes all night of course. hehe
Years of hard drinking can definitely do it; but OTOH so can severe kidney problems. LOL
