Yes, I truly don't like when people automatically assume I'm one race. I am obviously in a different situation than you are, race comes up a lot in my case. You see, no one really asks white people what their background is, but as soon as they see someone medium-toned with almond eyes, it's "what are you?" much of the time. It's either that, or they automatically choose only one race. So of course they're usually wrong. Yes this is a one-race mentality country, most definitely. You often have to choose. Especially if you have black blood in you. Remember the flak when Tiger Woods tried to explain he's multi-racial? You probably don't know that if you're not all white, somehow they manage to remind you of your race. I grew up in racially conscious situations on both sides, so I am not very happy when people start bringing up race because it is a sore point for me, and I see so much misinformation out there from people who really have no clue.
