Diva, I don't blame you for wanting to be given credit for your total heritage and not just one part of it. But, if you don't mind my saying so, I think it's up to you to let folks in on the truth. Of course people ASSUME by what they see. When people see me they assume I'm a white woman, and why would they not? When they see my husband they assume his background is just your common ordinary white guy; until he speaks then they know is he Hispanic.
I must have missed the flak about Tiger Woods. He was very open that his father is black, his mother is Asian and he has a mixture of other races as well. He seems to me to be proud of his background and chooses "other" to put emphasis on that. Frankly, I think we could ALL choose "other", because there is no such thing as one race. My husband is Spaniard on his mother's side and Mexican on his father's. My son is one-half whatever I am,and one-half Iranian. His skin is quite dark, probably darker than yours and he gets the "what nationality are you" question all the time. He's ASSUMED to be Mexican because of our Hispanic last name, but in fact he hasn't a drop of Mexican blood in him. Should he be offended? I don't know, but he isn't. It's a natural assumption, his last name together with his dark skin, screams Mexican.
Regards being sensitive to racial issues, all I can say is
white people take a lot of hits too. No matter how unbiased and unprejudiced we may be there are some people who are going to say "whites just don't get it", and isn't that prejudiced as well.?
Diva, we don't have the corner on prejudice - there are millions of people of other races that are equally bigoted; you for instance have painted all "whites" with the same brush. I don't think that's fair either. And there will always be discussions about racial issues; not doing that leaves us in ignorance and doesn't change a thing.
Please don't say I don't "get it", believe me I get it.
