You watch a show like Real World, right now there is an african-american man and an asian woman. Nobody in the house said anything about race, nobody made them feel less wanted or included, but in the behind the scenes interviews both these individuals say they feel like they are different and they use the word "minority" numerous times in reference to themselves.
In my viewpoint, THEY are making themselves a minority because they are letting themselves even call themselves that and for no reason. I'm sitting there watching this shaking my head saying "what did I miss? why are they even bringing this up about themselves?" and then you see these two isolating themselves and hanging out together.
I think (I can't say I know) if they act equal in their minds, they should be able to live day by day and not dwell on past racial experiences, or even their ancestors past racial experiences. "Minorities" are always going to be treated different, they are always going to be treated unfairly, it's sad to say but they will. They also will always blame white people for anything they can just based on the past, or because most of the government and authority are white. I don't have an answer for it, but race is not an issue in my life, I never let it be.
I am not a racist, I have always been equal to everyone even though my parents are somewhat racist and my grandfather really was. I could tell you my personal experiences from my many years of Chicago public schools where I was treated very badly by Hispanic and Black. I could tell you stories where I was befriended a black girl in grammar school and they changed the rules at school so we could not hang out together... so I have my experiences of my own, but I'm not going to keep that with me and let it effect my present or future feelings toward any other races then mine and I hate when I see people have racial viewpoints from either side of the fence.
I'm going to get off topic sort of because this next part isn't really about race but some things that have bothered me that I have seen in the past.
I have also seen a lot of people of all colors cry that they are treated unfairly, but in my opinion some just like to complain because they just like to make excuses for their short comings, or their plain laziness.
I remember a new hotel opening up in Chicago a few years ago, and a long line of people waiting in that line for the job openings there. They asked two black gentlemen what they were applying for and they said this or that, they were asked how long they were out of work, and one said 10 months, the other 2 years. They were asked why they wouldn't just take any job open, the reported said "like at McDonald's", and the men's comments were they didn't want to do that kind of work, they were more picky then that... yet just before that they stated how they are desperate for money, can barely buy food. I don't get it, if things are that bad, take a job, any job-- I would!
Or the other thing that bothers me is people in Cabrini Green (or pick any low income housing) on Welfare and barely able to put food on the table, and their kids are dirty and dressing in torn clothes-- but as the news crew scans their apartment they have cable, VCRs, video games, numerous televisions, big stereos, racks of CDs and movis etc. People need some priorities.
Right now I live in a town with only 15 Black, 18 Hispanic, 32 American Indiana, 19 Asian, AND just under 7,700 White. Not exactly a melting pot. LOL
I really don't know what people here are like, I don't think it's an issue. I have never been in a store, at work, or at any bar where anything racist was ever said, then again we are pretty much all white all the time, news and all. Totally different living here than in Chicago. I still tune into the WGN news here and it's unbelievable the difference in this town where there is close to zero crime, and WGN news where all it is, is shootings, rapes, murders, police chases, racial issues. Sad to say, but damn! I'm glad I'm not in Chicago anymore, and too bad because the city has a lot of good to offer.
