I doubt he "demanded" they go to trial; I don't think he really could do that....but he might have given her every reason to believe he could get her off and convinced her she stood to benefit from a trial.

I seem to recall the DA did offer her something - they usually do in these "not so world shaking" instances. After all she didn't commit murder, just shoplifting. And, I think it was her first offense. But, she may have insisted on a trial too. Who knows - the odds were stacked against her since they had surveillance tapes, and Geragos does like these famous people trials.
