Subject: Just what is morality?

It was reported that one of the main reasons President Bush won the election was that Christians believed him to be more moral than Kerry.

I fail to understand how someone can be considered moral when one believes that the end justifies the means. Is it moral to kill or do violence to those who do not do what you want? This is a violation of the command, “Thou shalt not kill.”

Is it moral to get rich by allowing sweat shops, paying slave-like wages and misusing the resources of the world by lessening environmental standards in spite of what Christ told us about loving one’s neighbor? Is it moral to overthrow a democratically-elected president of a country such as Haiti for the sake of making profits? Christ told us how hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God.

Is it moral to order one’s young to kill 100,000 innocent people and injure hundreds of thousands of others by invading their country to destroy someone whom the U.S. had supported and armed at a time when he was killing his own people? Did not Christ tell us to love our enemies, pray for them and do good for them?

Is it moral to spend a billion dollars to win an election and spend billions more on weapons systems at a time when worldwide there are 24,000 people dying each day because they lack the basic necessities of life? What did Christ teach us in Matthew 25? Is it moral to take away rights from gays and minorities who were born that way. Christ associated with those considered outcasts of society and gave them dignity, compassion and love. Was Christ immoral for doing this?

Is it moral to close down the abortion clinics forcing women determined to abort to do it in unsafe ways? It seems to me that it is more moral to have compassion on those who have to make a difficult choice and help them make the right choice. Closing abortion clinics will not stop abortions.

Is it moral to make more and more assault weapons and proliferate these throughout society? The weapons are meant to kill or harm others. Certainly Christ would not have encouraged people to make weapons and use them against one another in violation of His command to unconditionally love, not hurt or kill, people.

Is it moral to lie to the public? The WMD lie is one of many. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have shown where the U.S. under President Bush violated numerous human rights standards, including torture and executions in Afghanistan and Iraq yet he is described as the moral president.

You cannot legislate morality. Putting someone in office will not make society more moral. I believe the conservative evangelists know this as well. I believe they wanted Bush elected because they wanted to continue receiving federal funds for their churches.

They believe the end justifies the means which leads to more and more immorality.
