Charge against Fieger dropped

Attorney Discipline Board throws out misconduct complaint over 1999 remarks.

By David Shepardson / The Detroit News

Geoffrey Fieger, the flamboyant Southfield attorney and onetime gubernatorial candidate, won his last battle with the state panel that disciplines lawyers.

This month, the state Attorney Discipline Board voted 5-3 to throw out a professional misconduct charge against Fieger stemming from obscenity-laced comments he made on a radio talk show in 1999 about state appeals court judges who reversed a $15 million jury award for one of his clients.

He compared one judge to Adolph Hitler's mistress and said to the three-judge panel: "I declare war on you."

"We must not let (Fieger's) revolting language stir our passions and warp our interpretation of the rules," the majority wrote for the discipline board.

Repeated complaints have been dismissed against Fieger during the past decade.

"This has been an incessant thing in my life," Fieger said. "This is the end, I hope, and it reinstates my faith in the judicial process."

Fieger said he has been "the centerpiece of attacks" from thinned-skinned Republican judges who have been the subject of his verbal attacks.

"None of these complaints have been filed by any of my own clients. They were all strangers complaining of my criticism of public officials," Fieger said.
