ACTUALLY West Point is a service academy. These are not necessarily rich kids. They are students who performed well enough academically (and in extra curricular activities) to EARN nominations from their State Senators and Congressmen. The government pays for their education in exchange for a service commitment in the armed forces following graduation (which coincides with being commissioned as an officer).
