An appeals court has affirmed the verdict in a record Ohio medical malpractice case, but ordered a hearing to reduce the amount of damages awarded.
A jury awarded 19-year-old Walter Hollins and his mother Regina Harris 30 (m) million dollars in 2004, but the case has been tied up in appeals since then. Both now live in Detroit.
Their lawyer, Geoffrey Fieger, says he doubts the final verdict will be less than 27 (m) million dollars.
Attorneys for the now-defunct Cleveland hospital that was found negligent disagree. They expect the final award to be cut significantly.
Hollins was deprived of oxygen during birth and has the mental capabilities of a one-year-old. He also has cerebral palsy and can't move his arms and legs.
