Michigan Attorney General Admits Affair, Accuses Fieger of Blackmail

November 9, 2005
Attorney General Mike Cox admitted Wednesday that he had an extra-marital affair several years ago. He told reporters that a representative of attorney Geoffrey Fieger threatened to make the affair public.
"I will not let some bully stop me from doing my job," Cox said Wednesday.
"A number of years ago, I was unfaithful to my wife," the Republican Attorney General said with his wife Laura beside him. The couple, married for 11 years, had tears in their eyes. "We worked on our marriage day by day, week by week," Mike Cox said.
Cox said he told his wife of the affair on March 22, 2003. The couple then went through counseling.
The Attorney General went on to describe communications between himself and a man named Lee O’Brien whom he identified as an associate of attorney Geoffrey Fieger.
Fieger, a Democrat, ran for governor in 1998 and is well known for having defended Dr. Jack Kevorkian. He has said he will challenge to Cox in the 2006 race for Michigan Attorney General.
Cox explained that the Attorney General’s office was investigating Mr. Fieger at the request of the Michigan Secretary of State. The investigation focused on $450,000 that was given to a political action committee trying to defeat a candidate for state Supreme Court.
According to Cox, Fieger’s associate said the well known attorney would expose the Attorney General’s affair unless Cox looked the other way on the PAC investigation.
Fieger released a written statement Wednesday. "I have been blamed for a lot of things," he said. "This is the first time I have been blamed for another man cheating on his wife."
Speaking of Cox, Fieger’s statement said, "False accusations against me underscore that he is not qualified to be in a position of trust." "He should resign," Fieger said.
Laura Cox also spoke to reporters Wednesday. The Attorney General’s wife said, "I love my husband. I don’t regret any effort that we made and I’m very happy and blessed to remain married." "It just disgusts me that this had to occur – that these people wanted to do this," she said.
Attorney General Cox cited multiple meetings or conversations between himself and the Fieger associate. "One meeting included Fieger himself," Cox said.
"They thought I would cower," Mike Cox said Wednesday.
Oakland County Prosecutor David Gorcyca said that his office was looking into the allegations against Fieger. He said they would decide whether to file charges against the attorney later in the week.
"There were undercover officers who saw and overheard parts of the conversations. So, to deny that it took place – good luck," Gorcyca said.
