Fieger to represent teen charged with killing Oak Park officer
By L.L. BRASIER • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • May 12, 2009
Southfield attorney Geoffrey Fieger is expected to defend a Detroit teen charged with the murder of an Oak Park public safety officer.
Jonathan Belton, 16, is charged with shooting Mason Samborski, 28, of Howell, during a skirmish at an Oak Park apartment complex the night of Dec 28. His trial date, set for June 1, has been adjourned to Sept. 17 before Oakland County Circuit Court judge Rae Lee Chabot.
Police say Samborski stopped Belton on a routine traffic matter and discovered he did not have a driver's license. Belton, police say, told Samborski he had family living in a nearby apartment building and convinced Samborski to take him there, where the shooting occurred.
Fieger, known for his flamboyant courtroom demeanor and big jury awards in medical malpractice cases, also does defense work. He represented suicide doctor Jack Kevorkian for several years. He also defended Nathaniel Abraham, the state’s youngest defendant to be charged as adult with murder. Abraham was eventually convicted of second-degree murder but sentenced as a juvenile.
Fieger was in court this morning and could not be reached for comment.
Belton remains in the Oakland County jail without bond.
