The Knack seek damages from Run DMC
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Members of 1980's rock band The Knack have filed a lawsuit against Run DMC, for their use of an unlicensed sample of "My Sharona" in "It's Tricky."
The suit is officially filed against Run DMC and their producers, distributors, publishers and record companies, said the news release.
Doug Fieger and Berton Averre have filed the copyright infringement lawsuit in the U.S. States District Court for the Central District of California.
Run DMC, their manager, producers, publishers and record label allegedly took parts of "My Sharona" for use in "It's Tricky," which first appeared on Run DMC's "Raising Hell" in 1986.
Fieger and Averre, who wrote "My Sharona," obtained a copyright registration for the song in 1979 and claim that the other group never sought permission to sample it.
"That sound is not only the essence of 'My Sharona,' it is one of the most recognizable sounds in rock 'n' roll," said Fieger of the guitar riff from "My Sharona."
The complaint stated that Fieger and Averre want damages for the alleged unauthorized use of "My Sharona" in numerous Run DMC albums.
