Fieger sues court to block rules

Email this Print this Lawyer Geoffrey Fieger filed a federal lawsuit against the Michigan Supreme Court on Friday to prevent it from enforcing two court rules requiring lawyers to conduct themselves in a courteous manner.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Detroit, said the rules place lawyers under a threat of having their law licenses suspended for truthful and constitutionally protected speech. Fieger wants a temporary restraining order to block enforcement of the rules. A hearing on the request is set for Wednesday.

Court observers said the suit might be designed to head off a ruling by the state Supreme Court on a disciplinary case against Fieger. He is facing a possible reprimand for violating both rules in 1999.
