Case Description:
The Family and Estate of William V. Owen IV sued the City of Dearborn and Agron Seiko for the wrongful death of Mr. Owen in an automobile accident on February 17, 2003. Seiko, a 20-year-old ordiance officer, was driving his city owned vehicle at a high rate of speed in an attempt to join a police chase for a stolen vehicle. Seiko ran a red light while traveling about 60 miles an hour in a 40 mph zone in snowy conditions and hit Owen's car broadside. Owens died later at a local hospital. Seiko was charged with manslaughter with a motor vehicle.

Outcome: Plaintiffs' verdict for $22.5 million. The jury award included $10 million for their Mr. Owen's "conscious pain and suffering" and $12.53 million in compensatory damages for parents.
