TCM theory has it that it would be better to first expel the illness before tonifying the body. Hence, we usually give diaphoretic herbs first to increase perspiration before we give tonifying herbs to strengthen the weakend body. Doing it the other way round will instead "strengthen" the pathogenic factors! Moreover, Korean ginseng is considered "heaty" herb. Now, I know why you had that hacking cough and the very sore throat (all signs of "heatiness"). American ginseng is milder and of "cooler" nature. To your health!
