Will glared at her a moment but sat on the floor beside her. He took the offered cigarette but lit it with his own conjured flame, adding smoke to this one. Smoking couldn’t harm him if it was lit with his fire, the blue-grey smoke twisted into shapes when he puffed it out; animals, plants, houses, simple things but detailed because of their connection to his imagination.

“I was four and a half when they tossed me out…” he began, “Just dumped me on the street one day. We were going to the store, they said, to buy some toys.” Will chuckled softly to himself, exhaling the blue smoke again and letting it take the shape of his story. “I thought they’d just forgotten me there, but they never returned. The forsaken found me trying to scrap up some food in some garbage cans. They took me in right away, to the Mines.” The smoke swirled again to show caverns with ceilings held up by old boards. Metal tracks were melded together, coloured fire lined the walls. “Home.” He pointed to the world hanging in the air with a grin.

“They taught me how to survive here, with these humans. We have the power to show them what it’s like. Why should they keep the world to themselves and allow only those less fortunate than they to live.” He shook his head and, with a sigh, continued, “Someday we’ll win...”
