Buddha died of eating poisonous mashrooms.

I read in one of the texts that that was probably the most important event in Buddha's life. Since he was so spiritually advanced, he knew that he was going to die of eating the mashrooms. But the buddha do not express likes or dislikes for the alms given, he accepeted the alms with equanimity with full knowledge that it would kill him. After eating, he left the place with the monks to ensure that the alm giver did not get in trouble.

THoughtout the entire event - while he was dying, he kept perfect awareness and tranquility.
