Yes, according to Pranabananda, Babaji said to him He was in His "fourth kalpa", one kalpa being "the maximum lifespan of a human", and in the Kali Yuga one kalpa "is supposed to be 120 years." In other words, Babaji said he was 480 yrs. old at that time (1894 AD).

According to Swami Satyananda, in his biography on Lahiri Mahasaya, written in 1941, Babaji "has lived in a human body for almost 600 years; He is alive even today."

However, Prof. Jogesh Chandra Bhattacharya, also in his biography on the Yogiraj, states that Babaji "was many hundred years old and initiated the great Shankaracharya in the Yoga cult. He was also the spiritual preceptor of Sadhu Haridas."

Likewise, Paramahansa Yogananda wrote that Babaji was the Kriya Guru of Shankara and Kabir. In this case, Babaji would have in 1894 not just 480 years but almost or even more than 1000 years! Shankara supposedly lived in the nineth century AD, and Kabir is from the 15th century.

In Durga Mata's book there is a story on the first meeting of Babaji with Shankara, as told by Yogananda himself.

Maybe the solution is afforded by Tara Mata, who wrote in her article "Astrological World Cycles", "The ideal length of man’s life is limited by the number of years in the Sandhi period of the Age in which he is born." According to her, in the Golden Age (Satya Yuga), "Men live four centuries.... During this second Age [Treta], men lived for 300 years", and so on.

So "one kalpa" in Kali Yuga is 100-120 years, as Babaji said to Pranabananda; "one kalpa" in Dwapara = 200-240 years; "one kalpa" in Treta = 300-360 years; and "one kalpa" in Satya Yuga = 400-480 years. Babaji said he was in his "4th kalpa," but it is not very clear if he was refering to the Kali Yuga kalpa specifically. Maybe his mention to Kali Yuga had been just a reference for a calculus. If this is correct, his age would range from 400 (4 x 100) to 1920 (4 x 480) years!

That is why Yoganandaji wrote Babaji "has retained his physical form for centuries, perhaps for millenniums." He also is supposed to have said that Babaji was one of the three Wise Men who visit Jesus in the manger.

All of this is very controversial indeed.
