As the winner of the pageant, she bagged a cash prize of K250, 000 together with a lot of other additional prizes, including one-year free beauty treatment at Buti Care Centre as well as a one-year free subscription of Pride Magazine. Rhoda Nyirenda and Mable Banda were crowned first and second princess respectively in a competition which had 16 contestants parading in traditional wear, swim wear and evening wear. In other categories, Rachel Landson was voted Miss Personality and went away with K10,000 cash from the Minister of Youth and Culture, Phillip Bwanali who was guest of honour at the event. The new Miss Malawi also convinced the judges as she won the Miss Catwalk category while her second princess was Miss Smile. Asked how she felt about her victory, the distinctly overwhelmed Florence said: “I am so happy, that’s all I can say.” Later, in her first public appearance, she asserted that she intends to take over from what her predecessor has left and to work hand in hand with charity organisations in raising funds for the needy. The former beauty queen Mable Pullu wished her well: “I hope she works hard and that she is courageous enough to work with the less privileged. If she has any problems she can contact me any time,” said Pullu. Moreover, in what can be described as a departure from convention, Pullu has kept her Miss Malawi 2003 crown. “This year’s show has been organised by a new company called Events Management Limited which will be running the pageant from now onwards. For this reason we have also introduced a new crown and Mable will keep her crown for Miss Malawi 2003,” explained Carver Bhima, chairperson of the organising committee. Bhima said in an interview that the contestants came out nicely, the decorations were beautiful and most importantly, the show was highly patronised. “It’s always a pleasure to see the interest the public is developing in such shows. It indicates that the shows are acceptable to the greater majority of the general public,” said Bhima. Asked whether the presence of the former Big Brother housemates as composing the panel of judges, Warona Setshwaelo from Botswana and Gaetano Kaggwa from Uganda, could have explained the enthusiastic patronage, Bhima said: “It is most likely that the patronage was as it was because of the presence of the housemates. But I would not be surprised if the same enthusiasm would have been there even without the Big Brother Housemate around.” Besides the Big Brother housemates, Irene Nkhwazi, a former Miss Malawi, was also one of the celebrity judges. The Kamradz, A Phofomoka, and Chris Kelly added zest to the night’s entertainment as they played some of their hit songs like Afrika, Kilimu and Malawi’s version of Malaika, among others. Random interviews with the patrons revealed that the majority of them enjoyed the way the show was administered and that they were pleased with the choice of the winner. Bhima thanked all the sponsors who supported the show although he said some pulled out at the very last minute: “Right now we are preparing for the Miss World pageant.
