Subject: Collies Bashing

I have been into the winning dressing room of every club in this competition. The Collies sheds are no less enthusiastic in singing their team song than anyone else.

As far as I could see last year, there seemed to be great comraderie in the club and the spirit was noticable. It is very hard to win a premiership if the blokes are not prepared to dig deep and put their bodies on the line.

The whole idea of setting up leagues clubs was to provide profits to fund a football team and that's what Collies are doing. And doing it well.

I have been critical of their level of spending, especially in picking up the Wests trio last year just before the deadline but I'd rather see money put back into rugby league ahead of anything else.

Obviously if Collies go through this year and win the comp underfeated, then some sort of salary cap must be looked at.

If eg. Thirroul or Wests get up, the spending will come back in other benefits such as lifting standards that forced other clubs to do likewise. This is to the point that we have surpassed the troubled Newcastle comp to be the best in country league and are now in a position do do the same to the Jim Beam cup.

The ferocity of the attacks on the club will only create an 'everyone hates us be we don't care' attitude ala Millwall. And if they were lacking fair dinkum dedication to their club, these extreme attacks (as opposed to genuine questioning of their spending) will only fill them with resolve. If you feel they are lacking heart and only got over the line through mercenaries in 2004, imagine what they would do if they generate the loyalty that you feel your club has.

Because that's what will happen.

In fact, imagine if you made a ferocious attack on Collies, they printed it out and put it on the shed wall and then used it as motivation to beat your team, knocking them out of the semis? It has happened before (many teams have used criticism to try to get that last yard out of the team in an array of sports).

If I was Collies I'd be starting a bragging campaign about the quality of the side to draw more fans through the gates immediately. They should have been shouting about their thumping of Wenty from the rooftops. I'll be interested to see what sort of numbers turn out to Collies games this year and will be at the Corrimal-Collies game in round one.

Can't wait to see how things pan out. Watching Donny Tweddle racing into a $100 000 pack of forwards in front of a howling mob at Ziems is going to be a blast.

By all means complain about their spending if you wish, thats what the forum is for. But some of the extreme comments are only going to play into their hands and are not compatible with the atmosphere across the rest of the site.

It's gunna be a great season.
