Subject: One Week Till Tip Off - Predictions?

I don't think the Stags will be all that good this year. But then again, I don't think there will be any standout teams in the MAAC this year either.

Thus my prediction is mixed.

On the plus side, I think they will do okay in the MAAC. They aren't very big, but not many MAAC teams are. I'm guessing a lot of close MAAC nailbiters (why should this season be any different?)

1 - Manhattan 13-5
2 - Canisius 12-6
3 - Iona 11-7 (much better if Kelly isn't a stiff).
4 - Fairfield 10-8
5 - Marist 9-9
6 - Rider 9-9
7 - Niagara 8-10
8 - St Peters 7-11
9 - Loyola 6-12 (much better if Fofana isn't a stiff).
10 - Siena 5-13

On the down side, I'm guessing 2-7 out of conference and I fear that might be optimistic.

That makes 12-15. It will be interesting to see if TOT is able to field a competitive team against some of the heavyweights on the schedule. It will also be interesting to see how he compensates for such an undersized and inexperienced frontline. I think he has progressed significantly as a coach since he started, but this season might be his greatest challenge yet.

Best of luck to the team. Looking forward to their visit to DC in December.

[> Prediction 14-13 (11-7 in MAAC) -- JoeStag, 11:14:39pm 11/10/05 Thu, [1]

I think we will have a tough time with our OOC opponents as it’s a tough schedule and we have to go to battle without Maxwell. I do feel that we will pull off a nice upset because we have the 3-point firepower to do so ….. maybe Providence or St Joes. Bur, I still think we will end up going 3-6 in OOC.

We should do better in the MAAC as our team is guard oriented, and with Max and Mamadou arriving I think we have a pair of athletic forwards. I see us going 11-7 in the MAAC assuming Max is back, and playing to his potential….. and put us in the top 4 in the MAAC. That would give us a combined record of 14-13. But that is with the Max-Factor.

Defense will be our biggest concern, and I do not think we will have an excellent road record like we have had in the past because you need great "D" to win on the road, and I do not know if we have that. We have been 18-9 the last 3 year on the Road in the MAAC…… that is amazing and probably the best of any MAAC school.

Offensively we will be exciting, and we will upset teams and be a very dangerous team….. especially come MAAC tourney time

Agree that TOT has his biggest challenge, but I like the mix of player that we got.

Stagman, is your prediction with or without Max.

I think Stagman really got it right.

I am really concerned about the out of conference schedule. I'm afraid 2-7 is a real possibility. I'm hopeful we can go 3-6 and I would consider 4-5 a major coup.

When the Maac season roles along I think the stags will fair well. I think they will finish either 12-6 or 13-5, but the maac is well balanced and anything from 10-8 to 14-4 seem realistic possiblities. The two powerforwards MD2 well be key to the stags resurgence in the maac portion of the schedule.

I expect the stags to have a winning season with 15-17 wins by the end of the maac tournement.

[> Re: One Week Till Tip Off - Predictions? -- Stagman, 07:41:12am 11/11/05 Fri, [1]

My prediction is with Maxwell coming back. Even with Max, I think the Stags struggle mightily with their out of conference schedule. I'm not sure that there is even one OOC game we go into as a favorite.

I'm really hoping that O'Sullivan, Middleton, Hawkins can provide something in the middle. The reality is that they are all severely inexperienced. The reports that they have looked good in pre-season intrasquad scrimmages is virtually meaningless since they are playing against each other (i.e. If MOS looks really good, is it because he has improved or because Middleton can't play D?)

Unless they have really improved (MOS & Middleton), opponents should really take it to the hoop against us. End result? A team shooting layups and a lot of free throws usually beats a team shooting three pointers.

I hope that I'm wrong, but I fear that the imbalance between frontcourt and backcourt is really going to hurt.

Even if Maxwell comes back, is it realistic to hope he will be as effective/more effective after the suspension?

[> [> [> Re: Maxwell -- JoeStag, 09:30:24am 11/11/05 Fri, [1]

Stagman, I agree that we cannot win by just shooting 3-pointers. We have to get to the hoop and get fouled, but I do not think its going to be by low-posting a big man like MOS and Middleton..... its not their game. The inside scoring will have to come from guards like Todd, Han and Herbie driving to the hoop and either scoring inside or dishing off to a MOS/Carter/Max/Mamadou/Reedal for inside hoops/fouls. I think we will be able to go inside like that, and with pick and roles..... and be successfull

But I would not minimize the loss of Max. He is a 3rd team All MAAC, but at times he is the best player on the court, takes over games and plays like a first team player..... and he has played at that highest level for at least 6 games a year.... which I would equate to 6 wins a year. But Son of Doc is right that Max could be rusty. I think he might be able to practice before Dec22, and then he has got a week of practice, then a game vs Cal State-Northridge, before the MAAC Season. I would expect him to provide impact right of way. All indications are that he will be eligible.

I agree with JCM that we will be significantly better come MAAC season because of the easier MAAC and Max....... but we also are getting Mamadou, and he should help right of way.

So we got the following predictions:
12-15
14-13
15 to 17 wins including tourney

Anybody else going to step out on a limb.

Unfortunately, I did a prediction a few weeks ago, and landed in the same camp as Stagman. Too many qestion marks to believe this will be our year. Best hope is that we gain experience throughout the season and get hot around tourney time. I actually only have us winning 1 OOC game. I hope I'm completely off base.

OOC 1-8
MAAC 10-8

Total 11-16

It is a good thing none of you are suiting up. THis could be a very special season. OCC will be tough but by the end of the season we could be battle tested enough to win the whole thing. a lot of senior leadership in MB TT and BIG AL. MOS and MVS are a lot better than people think. Add some of these new guys and we could shock both IONA and MANHATTAN. Watch out for MARIST and CANISUS. It is going to be a fun season, alot better shooting and passing. Rebounding and tough D are always the keys. Remember ROBBIES senior run, it can happen again only further, if we play as a ...TEAM..

going .500 with our ooc will be an acomplishment. like everyone else, i see us with a good maac record and lousy ooc.
maac 11-7
ooc 2-7
just under .500 at 13-14

I added an extra conference win at the last minute and forgot to carry it into the total.

"But I would not minimize the loss of Max. He is a 3rd team All MAAC, but at times he is the best player on the court, takes over games and plays like a first team player"

Couldn't disagree on a player more- Maxwell is strictly a complimentary player ... he might have 1 or 2 games were he is a major factor, thats it. Out of conference, he is usually overmatched. Don't get me wrong- I like him. He's a decent player but he's never going to carry a team.

8-10 MAAC
3-6 OOC

11-16 Overall, and If I'm erring, my guess is I'm being overly optimistic. I'm hoping the optimists (over .500) are right, but my head says no. (Fortunately, my head is often wrong!)

[> Re: One Week Till Tip Off - Predictions? -- DitchMitch, 07:44:01pm 11/11/05 Fri, [1]

TOTAL 9-20
1-8 OOC
7-11 MAAC
1-1 MAAC Tourney

Reasons:
Tough OOC (toughest in the MAAC as far as I can see)
Lack of height
Inexperience

Just too many questions marks...will DeWitt come back AND play well? Will anyone frontcourt players step up? How much of an impact will the freshmen/transfer have? How good is the team chemistry?

If everything goes right, and team stays healthy, I could see 12 wins.

Hope I'm wrong...

I would say 10-17....based on frontcourt inexperience

It seems there's not a lot of optimism in stagland. I want to keep the faith but I must agree that this team will win or loss on the strength of two players: Geoff and Marty. If they play better than expected, stags have a good team. If they underperform preseason expectation this is a 9-20 team. If they play as expected 13-14 or 14-13 are most likely. I'm not quite the optimist Joe Stag is but I'm crossing my fingers that maxwell returns and the stags find a way to win 15.

RF,

Sounds like you are more optimistic that me.... I only predicted 14 wins, you had them as high as 15.

My feelings at this time are "optimitic" with some big "question marks". I think we have some very gifted offensive players, that are exciting..... and I think we have the firepower to beat anybody. This is a very different Fairfield team, with many more shooters than we have had in a long time. Seemingly with 6 shooters on the court at one time.

However the question marks are real in terms of Inside defense and rebounding..... but I think teaching defense and rebounding are TOT's strength as a coach. And I think the solution is team defense and boxing out.

Rider will finish higher than your prediction, especially if Kamron Warner is going to be a major scorer now that he is healthy. The frosh looked terrific tonight in a romp over a very good DIII team.

A very good D 111 team? Like saying my wife is gorgeous except for the hairy back and the bald head. Reality please!

Not saying they are going to win the MAAC Championship because they beat Albright but there wasn't a lot of rust for a first game with mostly frosh and sophs. The frosh played very well and showed a lot of game.

Rider's co-MAAC title team beat Susquehanna by like 40 points last year, that team had JJ, etc., this year's team was up by 34 over a team that beat Susquehanna twice last year.

The point is, there is plenty of talent on this year's roster despite all of the youth.

I agree with you. There is plenty of talent on Riders roster. Despite Riders youth after this last win in a scrimmage over a division III powerhouse I'd say they are poised to not only win the MAAC but to make a run in the NCAA tournament. I'm not saying they are a final 8, but they certainly have a shot at the sweet sixteen.

The Fairfield Fans tend to be a little delusional, but at least at Rider, our opinions are grounded in reality.

Interesting how these Rider morons call Fairfield a little delusional with half of the Fairfield fans above predicting 500 or losing seasons, while Rider fans claim their predictions are grounded in reality and they are talking about making a run in the NCAA tournament and sweet sixteen. What a bunch of hypocrites.

I have to think that last message had to be a little tongue in cheek poke at RR. Seriously, could anyone really think Rider is a sweet Sixteen Caliber team? I think Rider Fan's post had to be dripping with sarcasism and the point of Rider Fans post is that RR is delusional. Am I misreading this or could this guys seriously think Rider is NCAA bound?
