Subject: Doc's Roundtable

TOT talked for about 1.5 hours last night and gave us good feeling on what to except from this team. The common theme was that this team is VERY different,..... with passing, shooting and teamwork as a some of its strengths. And even the areas that need improvement, like defense and rebounding, are being addressed from a team perspective with scappy defense and having all 5 players hit the boards.

TOT told a story of how the team was really looking good offensivly and he did not know if that was Good offense or Lousy defense so he ask Coach to sit in during practice to get an independant evaluation (Coach is Gene Doris). Gene said what he noticed was how all the players seemed to know how and where everyone was moving. Even after only a few weeks of practice it looked like they had the chemistry of an experienced team. Kind of verifying the good offense.

TOT also talked about both scrimmages vs Army and Penn and said the team played well passing, shooting, scrappy D, and rebounding. Again verify what he was seeing offensively in practice manifested itself in the scimmages. Bell and Oglesby the top 2 scorers at Penn. Starters at Penn were Han, Todd, Bell, Cater, MOS. Next year they were looking to do one scrimmage and possibly an exhibition game vs Univ of Bridgeport.

TOT said quite a few players improved..... mentioning Carter, Bell, Oglesby, MVS, MOS and Todd. But he also commented on the Frosh saying that he feels they will have the same impact as Todd/Bell/Max had their frosh year

- Han leads team in an overall statistic kept by the staff whicj includes both Offensive and Defensive efficiency
- Herbie also leads as a shooter passer and defender
- Reedal can score, got his hair cut, is capapble as a PF vs MAAC teams
- Hawkins injured, could be out for season (ACL I think)

Some more info:

Mamadou will bring us strength and a physicalness inside. He is also a good passer. Dewitt is doing the things he needed to do as part of his suspension. He has started to practice and will reapply for re-admiitance to the teamfor the Dec 30th Calt State-Northridge game.

We asked if Nero had signed yet , but TOT could not comment. His body language showed only positive vibes. All indication are that we have a special player. Somebody we could have used this year. Nero is probably the only Fall signee. Recruiting needs are anybody taller than TOT. Big guys are really the only requirement.

Middleton was injured the week before he went to China, played OK. TOT says he has the skills, he just has to put it together and grow into his body. He says that Middleton is more advanced than Peter Debisschop was as a Soph, but Middleton has to want it bad enough like Debisschop.

Everyone liked teh schedule with long term deals with Providence, Georgetown, and St Joes. Yale series will continue next year. The are working on extending the Fordham deal. Both BC and Holy Cross will be pursued. BC might take some time, but they feel it will happen.

The Radio issue was recognized as a problem with the range of WVOF. SHU's contract with WICC was talked about. and the issue with WICC is that you are not only have to take a backseat to UCONN M/W but also SHU games could be tape delayed because of other WICC programming. Thats what happened last time Stags were on WICC. Other strong FM Stations want to stick with Music, while the other AM stations do not have a large signal. It seems a lot of it comes down to cost...... bigger the signal, bigger the cost and the value of what WICC was providing was questioned if its only a portion of the games and some being tape delayed. WICC is definitely the most expensive. Fr. von arx recognizes the issue with the WVOF signal at 88.5. There are talked to get some type of agreement with other 88.5 stations to carry our games. Internet Broadcasting will continue to be used.

The Leffler group should be starting a media blitz today. Immediate avenues are CT Post ads, 95 Billboard, ESPN, TNT all under the theme of "Hot Hoops at Harbor Yards". Leffler thinks they can get us to 5,300 fans in 3 years. They are also associated with the Tivvoli group, which handles group functions, so that should improve. This is a major investment by the university.

It was identified that we have to take advantage of St Joes and Providence coing into Harbor Yards and build on that. Leffler will help do that.

You mentioned a few days ago about a book on Fairfield basketball (25 years Plus 1..... The meroric rise of fairfield basketball...)

Where can I pick up a copy of this book?

Cover of Book about Fairfield Basketball below. Maybe you can find it on Google. I have a copy, and will try to find the publisher. Photo is of Stag great PG John Ryan in MSG, who had 23 and 23 assists in back to back games vs William and Mary and Villanova.

JoeStag,

Thanks for the report! Informative and thorough as usual. Couple of questions...

Did they discuss the possibility of moving WVOF to a new position on the dial?

Any discusson about cable broadcasting any home games?

Any discussion about Internet broadcasting any home games or a weekly recap show via The Ham Channel?

Thanks,

Stagophile

Minor correction, JS, he had 22 assists the first game then broke his own record with 23 the next game.

JoeStag,

Thanks for your thoughtful posts. I've seen Max running on North Benson Road at 7 a.m., and it's great to hear that he is practicing.

What do you make of Han starting at the point? Does it look like he'll be there vs St. Joe's? And can Oglesby play at the three? I'm trying to figure out where he'll get minutes.

I expect a surprising year from Carter and think many will be glad he came back.

Stago,
There was some mention of WVOF moving their position on the dial, but just talk as one option, along with increasing the signal or working with other stations. IMO, Fairfield should just buy another radio station and move WVOF. There was talk of TV Broadcasts thru Cablevision but the channels that they wanted to put us on are way up the dial, and not many viewers..... again a Cost vs Benefit thing. No talk of Internet or Han broadcasts.

79er,
It looks like Han could start even against St Francis. He is definitely has PG talents that nobody else on this team has. The question is if he is ready for Division I defenses. From what I have seen and heard over the last few days, I think we will go with 6 basic starters:

PG: Han
2G: Todd
3G: Bell
PF: Carter
PF: MOS
** Note MVS could easily be a starter at any one of the Guard positions according to TOT.

Both Herbie and Oglesby off the bench at guard, and they could be are 2 most explossive guards. TOT said that Oglesby is much like Bell in that they are good off picks, so I think we might see Oglesby at 3G. In addition, I think we will go to a 4-guard line-up on occassion.

I see Reedal and Middleton as backups at PF. They offer 2 totally diiferent skill sets, so depending on opponent and game situations, one might play more than the other. Reedal has looked very good, so I think it would be difficult to not give him a shot. Middleton is very big with long arms, so his presence alone does help the inside "D" if need be.

JS,

Thanks for the detailed update. I look for a .500 season with the Stags turning it on down the stretch run.

Aside from Nero, disappointing about recruiting. There is a very fine line between recruiting undiscovered gems and leftovers the longer the process goes into the Spring.
