Subject: Women get another commitment

Fairfield University head women's basketball coach Dianne Nolan announced today that Stephanie Geehan (Braintree, Mass.) has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at Fairfield University, and play for the women's basketball team.

"We are very happy to welcome Stephanie to the Fairfield University women's basketball family," Nolan said. "Stephanie is an exciting player and we are looking forward to her contributions over the course of her Fairfield career."

Geehan, a 6-foot-0 forward, will join the Stags for the start of the 2006-07 academic year, after completing her career at Braintree High School. As a junior at Braintree, Geehan averaged 13.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She also blocked nearly four shots per outing last winter, while dishing out over three assists a game, and averaging two steals per game.

In 2002, Braintree High School finished their season with a 7-13 record and missed the Massachusetts state championships. However the next season, the team reversed its fortunes and finished 13-7, earning a berth in the states and progressing to the second round before bowing out. The reason? There are probably a few, but one is undoubtedly the presence of 6-0 freshman forward Stephanie Geehan.

Geehan plays the power forward or center positions for her high school team, but is capable of playing any spot on the floor. When asked what the strengths of her game are, Geehan modestly replied, �[people] tell me I�m a good passer� and that she gets a lot of rebounds and blocks, but that�s only part of it. While she averages 11 points per game to go along with 9 rebounds and 5.5 blocks, Geehan also leads her team in assists and steals.

Her father, Steve, says that Geehan spends a lot of time working on her shooting, spending time in the driveway practicing her foul shots and that his daughter takes pride in making her free throws during games.

Geehan was the only freshman honored by being placed on the area�s All-Star first team. She�s also been named to the South Boston Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic team and All-Conference first team. Last year Geehan was invited to the prestigious Blue Star College Showcase.

A well-rounded girl, Geehan also spends time on her studies, as shown from the All-Academic award, as well as on other sports. In the fall, Geehan plays volleyball and in the spring, golf.

Hopefully, all of her hard work will pay off as Geehan works towards her college career. Letters have started arriving from colleges including some Division I schools. Now that the AAU season has started, more colleges will have a chance to see Geehan as she plays for her team, the Bay State Magic.

An ardent fan of Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, Geehan has attended a game at UConn to see them play and came away with the goal of playing for them some day. It may not be a far-fetched notion for such a talented young player.
