Subject: 3000+ games at AHY

So far this season 2005/2006(5-10) Fairfield has averaged 2404 at AHY with PC(3777)the best but Siena was only (1511), normally a good draw. The best chance to get 3000+ again this year will be Manhattan on Jan. 27 and Iona(Winter Homecoming)on Feb. 11. The University and in particular the Alumni Office has about three weeks left to promote the Iona game to the alumni fans, if it hopes to draw well.

In 2004/2005(15-15) the average at AHY was 2418 with Loyola(3924), Manhattan(3257)and Niagara(3217). In 2003/2004(19-11) the average at AHY was 2507 with Rider(3058) and George Washington(3018). In 2002/2003(19-12) the average was 2593 in the regular season and 2859 including the NIT game. BC(NIT)was the best ever (6585),St.John's(5277), Manhattan(5251),Harvard(3242)and Marist(3023) but Rider(1043),UNC-Wilmington(1412),Loyola(1416)did not draw fans. In 2001/2002(12-17) the first year at AHY,the average was 2835 with Manhattan(4864),RI(3572),and Siena(3018).

The last year at AH, 2000/2001(12-16) the average was 2095 with only one sellout(2479)Loyola but the lowest was only 1703 which was still better than some games at AHY during the last 5 seasons.

I appears to no surprise then that the name OOC games have drawn the best at AHY; BC, St. John's, PC, RI, and George Washington while MAAC rivalries draw well also; Manhattan, Iona, Siena and Niagara. Important MAAC games that effect the standings draw well depending on the year. Most likely these OOC games never would have been played at AH nor should they. Local fans don't want to pay the AHY prices to see Fairfield play just any team.

However, the average attendance has dropped every year at AHY since 2001/2002 and it appears that this year will probably be lower than last year. AH averaged almost 2100 fans and a lot more students were there as I recall than at AHY. So, would a 5000 seat on campus arena really be needed or would a 3000 seat arena be a better fit for all the womem's basketball, volleyball and some MAAC men's games?

The inability of the University to address the AHY attendance situation and correct it year after year is the real problem though.

The data for this season is skewed. 2 of the home games this year were missing students, cheerleaders and the band because of Finals (Fordham game) and Winter break (Siena game).

Lets not rush to conclusions. Staying at AHY is the best solution if we have support from the Adminstation, a winning team, players who "put on a show" and a strong marketing team.

The only way an on campus arena works is if we build a new 5k seat arena. Fairfield has plenty of money to support a new 5k seat arena on campus. But the town will not approve a new structure.

Look at it this way, if we do not stay at AHY and suceed then SHU will eat our lunch. SHU could eventually play in the arena while, FU continues to go no where and play in a high school gym.

Fairfield has the money. It just needs to spend it wisely. FU needs to use its resources and hire the best people. It looks like some departments are underfunded and some of the people in certain departments are not doing the job. Time to take action and hire the best people around; marketing, atheletic department, adminstration, etc.

Would SHU even be interested in playing at AHY and how many local basketball fans would go if they won't go to a Fairfield/Rider game. This year SHU is averaging 671 at their games. In 2004/2005 they did 661 and in 2003/2004 they only averaged 642. The Fairfield women out draw them.

Agree, Lets try to build and go forward NOT backward. We should stay at the Arena and put our money where our rhetoric is.
