Subject: Defense – We miss Goode and Kudjo defense

I think it’s obvious why we miss Deng Gai from a defensive perspective, but that’s only half our defensive issues. We miss what Goode and Kudjo brought to the Defensive table. And that has become painfully obvious since addition of Max and Mamadou, plus the emergence Middleton have somewhat improved our internal defense. Our main problem is Defense at the perimeter, and IMO, are guards are not playing tough enough, physical enough, and our letting our opposition be too COMFOTABLE. This did NOT happen with Goode and Kudjo, and this is what is missing.

Goode – made the opposition guard uncomfortable. He got inside the opponents comfort zone. He had his face 1 inch from his opponents chest, and he ran with him for 40 feet like that . He was a pest and the opposition knew it. He got into the opponents head. If his man wanted to left, Goode made him go right. If he wanted to go right, Goode made him go left. He was physical, and constantly hawking for the ball. Our opposition guards were not omfortable. Who is making our opposition guards uncomfortable on this team?????

Kudjo – was tough, he used his body, and he had his hands all over the opposition. Yes, sometimes he used his hands to much , and got called for the fouls, but he was the type of player that opposing coaches and fans would yell that Kudjo has his hands all over the offensive player……. And that was a great thing, because it accomplished 2 things; (1) he made the opposition uncomfortable, and (2) he got into the head of the man he was guarding.

Sure Goode and Kudjo got beat too, but not nearly as often, and the opponents guards were not comfortable shooting ore passing out to the arc.

Who on this team is doing that????? Is it important that we get in our opponents head????? Is it important to have physical guards?????? Who is our defensive stopper?????? I am shocked, surprised and disappointed how this team has lost its defensive personality. TOT and the coaching staff has to turn it around by teaching individual defensive techniques. IMO, we have not recruited defensive players recently, and we better start recruiting them, especially on the perimeter. I hear that the team is working a lot of defense, but I think it time to play the best defensive players . IMO, TOT has gotten away from that basic premise this year. The motto should be…. if you are not getting the job done defensively, you don’t play.

BTW, I think the players are playing hard, their hustling, but I think they need to play more like Kudjo and Goode..... more physical, more additude. Are they capable of doing that, I think so, but TOT has to instill a physical defensive additude into the players. IMO, Mamadou and Maxwell are playing good physical defense.

Coach Hobbie said it best last night at the Post game reception…… We had a reputation as a difficult team to score on the last few years, it’s not the case now.

mamadou has brought a lot of toughness to this team and its exciting to watch him. he is committing a lot of fouls but I like his agressiveness. more of the players need to be like him. maxwells a warrior too. bell is our best defensive guard but he is in and out of the line-up so I do not know how effective he can be like that. besides that, everyone else is suspect on defense with carter being the most overrated, thats why i do not understand why tot likes him. middleton has the potential to be a good defender if he throws his body around and knocks a few people down. what goode and sogadazi gave us on defense they also hurt us on offense. we need to meld han and goode together and todd and sogadazi.
