Subject: MAAC - Top half, Bottom half

At the begining of the season, most people said that most of the teams are quite close, but the results so far have been any but that. There has been very structured results so far:

- Manhattan has beaten everyone (mostly top half teams)
- All top half teams have beat bottom half teams
- There have only 2 games not covered by those 2 rules; (1) STP won at Canisius, and (2) Faifield beat Siena.

Manhattan 4-0
Saint Peter's 3-1
Loyola 3-1
Iona 3-1
Canisius 3-1
Siena 2-2
Fairfield 1-2
Rider 0-3
Marist 0-4
Niagara 0-4

Our goal right now is to play better and get us into that top half. A win at Rider puts us in a mid-level group with Siena and only 1 game out of 2nd place. However a loss, puts us solidly with bottem level teams. Truely a barometer game.

But to get into the top 4 bye positions, a couple of those top 4 teams have to slip. They are all playing good right now, but my guess is that STP and Loyola are the likely to falter, because of their reliance on one great player. Collins of Loyola had 9 three's yesterday in a close win for Loyola.

I think the league is going to end up with three tiers, Manhatten and Iona at the top, a group in the middle that plays 500 and a group that loses 12 games each. STP, Loyola and Cansius are not at the same level as Manhatten and Iona and it seems they have gotten their wins beating up on bottom teams: Niagara, Rider, Fairfield, Marist and Siena. I expect those teams to start ringing up the losses when they face Iona and Manhatten. On the other hand Niagara, Marist, will win some games as they have to play each other, and they will manage to beat other bottom tier schools.

I think at this early point the standings are quite misleading. While Loyola beat Fairfield, they did not leave me feeling that they won't end up around 500. They don't seem to be as good as Cansisus or Saint Peters. Nor did they make me believe that they will beat Siena.

The next week will be very telling as to where teams really fall as some of the bottom dwellers will begin to face off. I'm not willing to put Fairfield, Siena, Loyola or Cansius into the middle or bottom group until they play at couple of more games....
