Subject: Relooking at the Men’s Hoop team - 2006

So where does this team stand now that we have Max back and Mamadou eligible?????

IMO, Max adds a piece to the 5 piece puzzle of the starting line-up. And he adds an All-MAAC talent at that position. But I feel we need one more piece to be solved to really contend for the MAAC this year, and that’s at the other position frontcourt position, be it a Center or another forward. We have 4 opportunities for players to make a difference:

O’Sullivan – if he returns and is healthy, he can provide the additional size, rebounding, defense , and experience that we need while also being an important part of keeping this offense an open offense with outside and inside balance. IMO, he is the best choice and would fit perfectly ….. EXCEPT he is the least likely to be available because of his injury.

Middleton – has shown that with his height alone, he can help the defense. His rebounding numbers are way up when you look at his rebounds per minute played, and that needs to be noted. His offense is neither inside nor outside at his point, but he does pass well, so he can be of value to the offense. But if he continues to improve the defense and rebounds at the same pace and stays aggressive for the whole game, he could be the option.

Mamadou - similar player to Maxwell, and if he played besides Max, we would have 2 frontcourt players with athleticism and aggressive physical game. It would makes us smaller, and I think that could hurt our defense….. but they could be out 2 best rebounders, and make us a quick team. That could work against some MAAC opponents, or at some times in a game. He had not played a college game for 23 months until Northridge, so his ability to shake the rust will be key.

Carter – He is also similar to Max, but does not have the athleticism or talent of Max, nor really Mamadou. Until Mamadou gets more comfortable on the court, Carter could still be in the rotation, but the extent of his injury is unknown.

We need one of these 4 options to step-up. Carter has been in the program for 5 years so his upside is known. But Middleton and Mamadou have great opportunites to improve game by game. IMO, with current production from these guys probably put us at 9-9 in the league. I feel with our schedule we can win everyone of our remaining games, or we could lose everyone too. I think all games will be close.

But having a player that can “Make Plays” at this 5th starting position at critical parts of the game will be the differentiator. And we must continue to improve defensively…… then , I think we can make the top 4 in the MAAC.

Right now its got to be Dewitt and Geoff as starters with Mama being the first off the bench. Carter will be out for a while and when he gets healthy Mama will leave him in the dust. If Mos comes back this year, I would be surprised. This also makes room for Reedal. Him and Dewitt would make a nice inside outside combination. Next two games are against some small teams, so don't be surprised if we go with the extra guard.

I've seen enough of Middleton to know this kids should be getting more than 20 minutes a game. When he plays he has been delivering exactly what the stags need. Some interior defense and rebounding. If the kids doesn't score a point all season and gives the stags these solid play in these two areas he should be starting. Recently the stags won 19 games two years in a row with Goode playing 35 minutes and not really scoring. Eddie Golden didn't score. There are lots of good teams with 4 player offenses. But there aren't a lot of good teams that can't defend the middle or rebound.

Maxwell will make a huge difference to these team Imagine if we had gotten 6 boards and 50+% shooting from the powerforward position all season. We would have beaten St. Francis, Providence and Loyola.

So the way I see it there's not a lot for TOT to think about. Carter's injury has saved TOT from having to make anything that resembles a tough decision in the short term. You only have four horses that can player in the frontcourt, Middleton, Maxwell, Mamadou and Reedal. Maxwell gets the most minutes of this group, 35 to 40 minutes a game if he stays out of foul trouble. Middleton and Mamadou share the remaining minutes with Middleton getting at least 20 minutes a game. Reedal sees time as his play improves and situations merit. There really aren't any other options.

I agree on Middleton. Why wasn't this guy playing earlier in the year?

IMO, Middleton has become more agressive on the court and is playing with a sense of purpose. There is certainly a lot more need for improvement but his rebounding numbers are significantly better...... making a double jump from poor to very good. Check out these rebounding averages per 40 minutes:

Last year - 7 rebs in 57 minutes, an average of 4.9 rebs
1st 5 games - 6 rebs in 51 minutes, an average of 4.7 rebs
Last 4 games - 21 rebs in 76 minutes, an average of 11.0 rebs

Don't know if Middleton's defense has improved as dramatically, but certainly his size alone creates some intimidation. The next two games are against teams that are smaller and quicker, so Middleton's quickness will be challenged on "D". Siena mainly goies 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 upfront, while Canisius goes 6-5, 6-5, 6-3 upfront.

I think Middleton's improvement can be attributed to more actual game experience and confidence that no matter what happens he's going to get to play.

I think Middleton should have gotten more actual game experience earlier in his career.....

How about the 3M frontcourt of Max, Mama and Middleton?
