Subject: MAAC goes 3-0 tonight

Looks like the MAAC is a lot stonger than expected, with wins against A-10 and Patriot league. And beating former MAACers Holy Cross and Fordham is always a good sign.

- St Peters gets its first win of the season over Lafayette by 3... and it was on the road

- Siena beats Holy Cross and Siena had a double digit lead in the 2nd half

- Iona beats Fordham at Fordham by 1. Gaels are undefeated at 4-0 while Fordham is like 1-5. Fordham is looking like an average MAAC team.

The MAAC RPI has to ber very good.

The MAAC is currently ranked 16th in college RPI. Still early, but results are promising. Time for the Stags to start contributing...

Iona 62
Loyola 63
SPC 101
Niagara 115
Siena 161
Ryder 177
Marist 186
Manhattan 256
Fairfield 271
Canisius 313

One of the more bothersome traits of Fairfield basketball has been our lack of upset wins. Every other MAAC team and mid-major once in a while shocks and delights their fans with a truly unexpected win. Over the last twenty years, you can likely count the Fairfield upsets on one hand. Coming close doesn't count. Fairfield has to be the worst in the MAAC with pulling off a surprise. How about tonight guys?

I think people would be less critical if FF could give them a lasting memory of a shocker against a highly touted opponent.

Champ, after the Providence game I called my son and told him that we almost beat Providence. His response was "Another almost". He has a more realistic perspective than many of us. I agree with your post.

Is anyone impressed with that record?

Frank F, you can't be serious. You offer up the overall MAAC record without breaking down and analyzing the opponents nor look at the score margin of some of the Major opponent losses. Considering the overall level of competition that the MAAC has been playing (yes, there are some cupcakes), I am very impressed with the MAAC's OOC performance this year.

Shame on you for presenting such an incomplete and sloppy analysis! :-)

I am glad you are impressed with a 14-21 record - I must say I am not. With people being so easily impressed, its no wonder the MAAC is so awful. The MAAC has one significant win in 35 games - that is the Iona win over Iowa St.

Thanks for pointing that out. You're right. We should probably all just put on UConn sweatshirts and save ourselves all this futility.

We're 14-21, that's true.

Now, a side project for you: please count up how many of those 35 games that the MAAC was the home team for.

Will save you the time. Twelve. The MAAC has been home for 12 of the 35 games. The actual tally is 12 home games, 3 neutral site games (MAAC is 2-1 in these), and 20 road games. Oh, and there were 11 games in there against power conference (BCS conferences). How many games did you expect to win?

You said that there was only one quality win the Iowa State game. That's pretty much true. How many really piss-poor losses were there--truly games the MAAC should have won but didn't? Two? Three?

All of this suggests that the MAAC has done well--not spectacular, but well. Don't forget that the league saw a LOT of key players graduate, which means a lot of younger lineups. You see that youth when you see close losses, just like you see veteran play when you see close wins (see Iona).

The only MAAC program that has completely been a disappointment is Canisius. You guys might include yourselves, but it likely wouldn't have been that bad if you had DMax. You also have played a pretty tough schedule. Manhattan hasn't been great either but their schedule has been pretty nasty as well.

I agree with some of what you have said, however in my universe 14-21 is a terrible record. I don't care whether its on our court or in Tokyo, I really don't care if Maxwell is out (other teams have players injured or suspended), and I don't care if key players graduated (don't they graduate from other schools too?).
The bottom line is there is no athletic league in the world where a 14-21 record is doing "well".

MAAC goes 0-2 tonight including Canisius losing to Fairly Ridiculous on their home court. 14-23 record.
By the logic of some on this board, I suppose now the league is doing even better than yesterday, when we were 14-21.

Good day for the Maac. League goes 5-1 with Fairfield, Marist, Siena, Rider and Loyola winning. Niagara the lone loser tonight. I believe that makes the Maac about 19-22 and should help the RPI a little. However each of the teams that lost to a Maac opponent today was 1-4 or 1-5, so the Maac beat up on some pretty weak teams tonight.

Does anyone know of a site that updates RPI automatically as the scored come in. Every site I go to is at least a day behind, some as much as a week...

It says updated every 5 minutes, but at 8:15 am on Sunday, it still shows the Stags as being 0-4.

[> MAAC OCC RECORD NOW 20-22 -- jcm, 09:25:41pm 12/04/05 Sun, [1]

Macc goes 6-1 over the weekend and the conference RPI drops from 13 down to 19. The Maac had a nice weekend but beat up on some pretty weak teams which actually resulting in lowering their RPI quite a bit. Maac could just as easily be back in 14th by this time next week with a really good week or could fall as low as 25th with a really bad week.

Right now the Maac has 2 teams in the top 100 for RPI, Iona 35 and Loyola 41. Here's the upcoming games that can effect the conference RPI this week:

Dec. 06 Monmouth @ Saint Peter's RPI 275
Dec. 06 Tue Manhattan @ Rhode Island RPI 47
Dec. 06 Tue Ohio @ Marist RPI 122
Dec. 10 Sat Delaware @ Rider RPI 246
Dec. 11 Sun Fairfield @ Georgetown RPI 68

Manhatten, Fairfield and Marist have a chance to really boost the Maac's rpi with a win, St. Peters or Rider could lower the RPI with bad losses. Maac needs to go 3-2 or better in these game for the rpi to go up. 4-1 would cause a significant move.

The RPI your using is not the most accurate since it likely doesn't balance SOS with W/L's. Loyola, for example, should not be ranked 41, nor even Iona at 35. You will need at least another two weeks to use these as a guide, be it individual or conference standing.

[> [> Maac this week -- JCM, 01:44:25pm 12/20/05 Tue, [1]

Tuesday, Dec. 20
Manhattan @ South Dakota State 8:00 pm
Wednesday, Dec. 21
St. Bonaventure @ Marist 7:30 pm
Niagara @ Notre Dame 7:30 pm
Thursday, Dec. 22
Boston University @ Canisius 2:00 pm
Fairleigh Dickinson @ Saint Peter's [Sirius Ch. 125] 7:00 pm
Friday, Dec. 23
Iona vs Kentucky (@ Louisville, Ky.) 7:00 pm
Loyola @ Virginia 7:00 pm
Fordham @ Manhattan 7:00 pm
Siena @ Massachusetts 7:00 pm

I imagine after this week the Maac's final conference RPI will nearly be set. Lots of chances for the Maac to score upsets against higher conferences, conversely, Maac has a chance to put up a lot of losses. Even though it has been a down year OCC for the stags, It would be nice if our other Maac teams could do well. If Iona wins Friday it will be very good for the conference as they will surely continue to get top 25 votes

[> MAAC goes 6-1 this weekend -- Tony, 06:37:35am 12/05/05 Mon, [1]

While I agree individual teams RPI don't make sense yet( most teams only have 3 to 5 games) the conference as a whole now has 44 games so conference RPI is starting to make sense. ( MAAC is 20-24)In fact conference RPI will be pretty much set for the season in about two weeks. While the MAAC has only the one eye popping win, we have been beating up on the weaker conferences. For instance the MAAC is now 5-1 against the AE , why is that significant last season the MAAC was 0-9 against the AE one of the reasons why the MAAC had a bad year RPI wise. The MAAC is not a major conference , we will only get so many big wins, what we should strive for is a conference RPI between 13 and 18, the lower the better, theoretically the lower the conference RPI the better the seed in the NCAA our conference champion should get, not to mention it increases our chances of landing 1 or 2 teams in the NIT. Considering how young the conference teams are as a whole I am pleasantly surprised with Conference RPI so far. Lets hope the MAAC can continue winning games it should over the next few weeks
