The Fairfield admin and basketball team needs to wake up and learn a lesson from this. People will come out to watch in numbers if the team is successful! Plain and simple as that.

Stags Rally, Top Yale in OT

Senior Mike Chaconas tied the game with 50 seconds left in the third period and freshman Eddie Mazur won it in overtime, as Fairfield narrowly escaped disaster in a nonleague game against Yale Wednesday night. The win marks the 10th straight for the Stags, who trailed in a game for only the third time this season.

The match was a stalemate between the rival Connecticut schools for a large portion of the game, as neither team was able to make things happen offensively. The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie early in the second period as they were able to convert on a 2 on 1 odd man rush.

With little offensive production from the Stags' forwards, sophomore goaltender Bill Dwyer was forced to carry the weight on his shoulders, and he did just that as he made several spectacular saves to keep Fairfield in the game. Dwyer finished with 22 saves on the night.

With just 50 seconds remaining in regulation, Chaconas danced around a sprawled out Yale goaltender and slid the puck just inside the far post to tie the score at one. A Yale penalty in the waning moments of the third period led to an ensuing power play for the Stags that would ultimately prove to be the deciding factor.

Thirty seconds in to the first overtime, with Fairfield still on the powerplay, freshman Eddie Mazur skated from end to end and and around the Yale goaltender to score the game winning goal.

Despite a lackluster performance, the Stags managed to come away with the victory and keep their winning streak in tact. Next up for the Fairfield squad is division rival, Columbia. The game should be one for the books for the Stags, as the Columbia team is coached by former Soviet Union superstar, Alexei Kasatonov. Game time is slated for 8:30PM at the Wonderland. Fan busses will shuttle from the Rec Plex starting at 8:00.

Great to hear that we have a team that is performing so well, even if it is on the Club level. Does the team receive any financial support from the university or do the players bear the burden of taking care of expenses?

Good financial support from the University. The best funded club sport. Kids also pay dues and supply most of the equipment, although not all. This is the level of hockey that Fairfield can and will be successful at.
