Subject: Mike & The Mad Dog (WFAN Radio)

Did anyone else hear Mike and Russo discussing the Fairfield basketball situation? They were stupified by the St Francis and St. Josephs results, Chris Russo commenting that he couldn't understand how any team could lose on their home court by the score we did to St. Joseph's.

I've been away for the NY area for some time, but at this time of the year, I can actually pull in WFAN late in the day down here in the DC area. I've been appalled at how nasty Francesa and Russo have become.

I did not hear them talking about that, but I was listening the other day when they were about to begin ripping Fairfield. Thankfully they got diverted by ripping into Yale football instead (Bob Heussler also does play by play for Yale).

They were merciless with regards to the Yale coach and what they were saying was putting Heussler in a very difficult position. He actually had to get Russo to apologize and retract what he had said.

A week before, they were absolutely merciless to Rutgers football for losing badly to Louisville, even though Rutgers is having its best season in the last 15. They were killing the Rutgers play by play guy (Carlin?) and the Rutgers program.

They used to be good sports commentators and mixed playful banter with some good discussion. Now it seems that they think they are kings of the world and can say anything they want. I guess that's what $800,000 per year and a home in New Canaan will do to you. They were much better when they were no names.

Actually several years ago they were making more than a million apiece. I believe that their show is the most popular sports show in the country. I rarely listen. When a show commits more time to commercials than to interacting with the callers, its time to move on. However Russo's disbelief that a team could lose by 31 on its home court was shared by me. I was at the game and was asking myself how this could be happening.

I heard the discussion with the Rutgers play by play man and it was disgraceful the beating those two guys gave him - that was not sports talk, it was two pompous men putting down everything good that program has accomplished this year and calling it all good natured jesting. I agree with the comments Stagman made above.

I don't listen too often, but those two guys don't know college sports at all. They are pretty good with professional sports.

They are not the best sports show on that station either. I prefer Sid.

I am not condoning their behavior; I agree they were over the top. But are you aware that the Rutgers play by play announcer they were talking to, Chris Carlin, is a former producer on their show. They gave him his start in radio, and I believe they are still friends. A lot of what they said was in fun.

Yeah, they have been teasing Heusler for years about the Stags, they have no personal grudge against FU. Besides, they both came here during Cormier's days for a great promotion and did a good job for the school. Plus, Mad Dog Russo, who lives in New Canaan, has not hidden the fact that he loves the Fairfield campus and has joked on the air about how can he get his daughter into the school one day.
