Subject: Food for thought
Having completed the Turkey day ritual and thinking about the situation, we have to face facts. First, we are a cupcake - one with frosting and a piece of plastic sticking out of the top. How long we remain one is anyone's guess, but, under current conditions, please think long term.
We are what we are, which is not a very good team. I have read the "reasons" why people think we should be better. And those who point out our shortcomings, pun intended. I read about why we should or should not play at AHY. And, when all else fails, let's discuss anything but Stag basketball.
Anyone can be a frontrunner when times are good. Right now, they're not. Which is why we need to support this team more than ever. They deserve everything we can do to pick them up and carry them until things get turned around. So, until the last horn sounds, get your fannies in the seats or yell at the top of your lungs or write your checks, all in support of the program. If you choose not to do so, fine - but please take the negativity elsewhere.

" They deserve everything we can do to pick them up and carry them until things get turned around"
THEY deserve...THEY deserve? What about what the Fairfield supporter deserves?
THEY are getting $150,000 scholarships. The coaches are getting paid well and earn a living. What about providing a competetive product so that the fans get what they are paying for? What about providing a winning program for fans and alumni to get excited about?
Fairfield has a horrible overall Div I record and have been even worse in the MAAC. How long do you think we can support this kind of performance?
WHEN (if ever) WILL EXPECTATIONS RISE ENOUGH TO FORCE THIS UNIVERSITY TO MAKE A SERIOUS ATTEMPT TO PUT A GOOD SPORTS PRODUCT OUT THERE?

I am not talking about this team specifically - I am talking the history of Fairfield basketball.
It is early in the season, but most of us have seen enough. In fact, most of us knew before the season began that this team could not win because it didn't have a frontcourt. Some of us were distracted to some extent by the report of standout freshman players - which, it appears, were false. Yes, Han looks like he has potential.... just what we need, another 6' guard.
I am tired of people blaming the fans for losing basketball teams and poor attendance.
Lets assign to blame where it belongs---- to a lack of will at Fairfield University.

2 games do not make a trend -- JoeStag, 01:45:45pm 11/25/05 Fri, [1]
StagintheSun,
While I agree 100% that we should still support the team, I disagree with your statements that says we are a cupcake and lets think in the long term. Are you suggesting that people give-up on the Season based on the results of 2 games..... and we are only as good as our performance vs St Joes. If 2 games make a trend, then I think you only need to look back 3 years when we started with 2 home losses to Harvard and St Johns. All the exact same things were being said about the team back then, and probably worse.... and what did we do, but win 19 of our next 27 games, and go to the NIT. That home Harvard loss three years ago was just as bad as this St Joes loss.
Now, I agree that this years team has some holes in it, and I am not expecting 19 wins, but to classify the strength of this team after 2 games, I think is premature, especially since they are playing without Maxwell. In all reality, we are trying to replaced an All MAAC player in Maxwell with players thta have been 3rd string players in the past in Carter and Middleton, and a Frosh Reedal. And when you add that to the fact that we are transitioning from a defensive team to an offensive team, and learning how to win without Gai and Goode, I think fans need to show some patience.
I think most fans have been understanding predicting 1-3 wins in OOC, because they knew that 1st semester would be a struggle under the circumstances. But most fans also predicted a winning MAAC season. And from what I have seen so far, if Maxwell does return, and MOS and Han's early season performances continue, then I think we have shown enough to give us hope that they can be more that capable replacements for starters Gai, Goode, and Maxwell. I still see us doing well in the MAAC and Challenging for the title.
So I agree with Staginthesun, that this team should be supported, and they do deserve it. They have have played more exciting and winning games in a 3 year period than any Fairfield team in 25-30 years. We also have probably one of best MAAC regular season W-L records over the last 3 years...... maybe only Manhattan and Niagara is a game or 2 better than us. I would say that the players most definitely deserve our support, because many of those same players that were responsible for those wins, are on this current team. Expectations are that everyone show that respect on this message board.

We are not a good team right now. We are missing Dewitt just as much as we are missing Gai, thats our entire starting frontcourt from last year. I love Carter's hustle and he is trying his best, but that is still not good enough. We need big Geoff to improve and Dewiit to to return for us to be any good. No reason to get down on this team as Marty is looking good, and if we can eventually get to a frontcourt rotation of Marty, Dewitt, Geoff and Mamadou, then we can do some damage.

Agree on your 2nd semester rotation for the frontcourt, and if Middleton can give us at least 10-15 minutes of good defensive presence and rebounding, then I really think we will be in good shape up front.
But we still have to address the frontcourt for the next 6 games. MOS is a mainstay, but the other frontcourt position is really unsettled. IMO, Carter, Middleton and Reedal are all about the same level, and probably should be given an equal shot at PT. We need one of them to emerge. I hope its Middleton.
