Do you know what age it would be made legal? Would it be 21? Another idea to keep in mind is that the media could serve as a model to the kids. There are plenty of movies/TV shows that have shown marijuana in use (and not always in a negative light). Although, I think kids would be more likely to imitate friends/peers. There would also probably be a mindset of rebelliousness since it would be legal for adults; a lot of kids would think this is unfair and therefore do it anyway. Issues like this have always interested me since I grew up with a father who works for the Illinois State Police and specialized in narcotics for the first 19 years of my life. From a young age I have heard about various types of drugs. Unlike some children, though, I have never desired to rebel against my parents but rather to mimic their views. I was also put through the D.A.R.E. program at school which at that age (pre-teen) did not seem to be effective for me but again I was already very anti-drugs. I never even considered doing any of them. I think it is too difficult to say whether kids would mimic their parents or not if marijuana was legal. I think depending on how the parent was seen when using marijuana would definitely have an effect (i.e. looks peaceful/relaxing or if it looks like it is making them sick). I agree that the same number of kids would still probably use it whether it is legal or not. However, once legal the amount available would increase which seems like it would only increase the availability to the youth.
