Girard would be more than happy to agree with you. He doesn't necessarily take mimetic desire outside of the biological sphere. Rather he sees it as overlapping and intensifying the instinctual. Thus, we are in one sense hard-wired for mimetic rivalry. Read Chapter Three of Things Hidden to see how he develops this. The fact that we imitate is not the interesting part about mimetic desire. Rather, it is the host of symbols and institutions intertwined to make a complex system of desire which ultimately depends on a metaphysical relation to the other rather than some immediate object. The object is just the beginning.
