Laughing is extremely contagious. I have had experiences where one of my friends started laughing, and I had no idea why but I started to laugh, too. Then it gets to a point where everyone is laughing, and it is hard to stop. I’ve also been in a situation where someone said something that was funny (even though they didn’t mean it to be), and everyone tries to control their laughter. So everyone looks down but at some point two people make eye contact and can’t help but burst out laughing, thus encouraging everyone else to begin laughing. I’ve definitely had similar experiences to yours where I did not hear what the joke was but heard the laughter and began to laugh. Smiling also seems to be quite contagious. One time in acting class a group was performing a scene, and they were supposed to focus on conveying joy and happiness. So throughout the exercises they had huge smiles on their faces. Subsequently, everyone in the class began to smile too. I think it’s fascinating how something like laughter or a simple smile can spread so quickly even when the source of happiness or humor is unknown.
