Subject: Boccacio and Contagion

The Decameron has a scene similar to one found in Thucydides. In fact, a similar picture has been drawn in many little things that we have read or talked about (or watched!!) this semester. Boccacio opens with a discussion of the plague. The plague, or CONTAGION, has racked his lovely Italy. The scene is quite depressing, with mothers leaving their children and friends dying alone. All elements of communal order break down and all ties are lost. Its identical even to the what we see in 28 days later, when the soldiers prepare to communally have their way with two women (one of whom is 14). Contagion erases all traces of society, and a feeling of hoplessness prevails.
