Subject: Veritgo Doubles

Forgive me if someone addressed this before, like when the Hitchcock CCA was going on, but I don't remember seeing it and I think it would be a shame if the double situation in "Vertigo" went unnoticed. If you haven't seen the movie then don't ruin it for yourself by reading my post!! Anyway, the entire Judy/Madeleine situation is disturbing for the audience to watch. Not only is the audience disturbed by the fact that Judy can imitate Madeleine so well, but the fact that her love for Scottie runs so deep that she is willing to "be" Madeleine for him, to give him the love that he lost is also incredibly disturbing. When Judy objects to part of her "transformation" into Madeleine, desired and provided by Scottie, Scottie says "It can't matter to you!" The audience just cringes...especially when, after a while, it doesn't seem to matter to Judy anymore. She gives in and it's only when Judy is able to imitate Madeleine to Scottie's satisfaction that he feels he can truly love her. Sorry, I couldn't find an entire clip that included the salon montage, but here's a clip of Judy's transformation and the reaction it spurs in Scottie.
