Subject: Fake-Bake Mimesis

So, in mid-June in Ohio, everyone is a queer shade of orange, because they have a fake tan. Being a homeschool family, though, my sisters and I do not get fake tans. We do, however, get little friends from Germany every summer. A large group of German students from a music gymnasium were touring our city, and some of them were staying with us. My younger sister Anna went on a day-outing with the German students, and was tickled at their friendliness and accpetance of her. Toward the end of the day, somehow the Germans discovered she was not a member of their group, but an American. A boy said to her, "You are an American? But ... you are not brown."

No one had even noticed this before. Because the imitation of tanning was so intense among all of the Americans they had seen, they did not even recognize someone without a fake tan as American. The trend had reached everyone in the country, except sweet innocent Anna.
